Set Geographic Target with Google Webmaster Tools

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

If your site targets users in a particular geographic location, you can use our geographic target tool to provide us with information that will help us determine how your site appears in our country-specific search results, and also improve our search results for geographic queries.

In short, if your site is tailored to a certain geographic location, you may want to use this feature. Google says, “If your site is targeting users within a particular geographic area, please provide us with the relevant information below, using only the fields that apply to your target audience.”

Clarify, it is not to tell Google. Hey, Google, my site is hosted in Canada. It is to say that I am trying to target users who are based in this specific location. So your site can be hosted anywhere, Google won’t care, Google will learn that you are trying to target a specific location by you setting this feature.

To set a geographic target:

  1. Sign into Google Webmaster Tools with your Google Account.
  2. Click the URL for the site you want.
  3. Click Tools, and then click Set geographic target.
  4. Select Associate a geographic location with this site.
  5. Select the geographic information that applies to your site’s target audience, and click Save.

Here in this video Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa explains how it works and when to use it.

Get your website indexed quickly in Search Engines

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

When you register a new domain and build a website, it might take too long to get indexed in search engines. The reason is when you add your url to search engines, It may take several weeks to for the search engine bots to crawl your site. I have seen up to three months to get crawled after the url submission.

But in case, if you want your site to get indexed as quickly as possible, do not stop just by submitting your website url to search engines. Follow the below ethical steps to get indexed as quickly as possible in search engines. May be, your site could be crawled in just 24 hours and you could start seeing your websites shown up in search results.

  1. Create Content Pages.
After registering your new domain, first thing you will do is, you will make an “Under Construction Page”. STOP these formal stuffs and spend some time in making at least four or five content rich pages. Let all the few pages linked from the home page (instead of under construction page).
  2. Tag your Website URL in Social Bookmarking Sites.
Search engine bots like Google, visits the Social Bookmarking sites regularly. So making there a text link to your will have more chance to get crawled quicker. This is like inviting the bots to your site, on its way. Social Bookmarking sites I suggest are Del.icio.us, BlinkList, StumbleUpon.com, and Furl.
  3. Posting your Website URL in popular Blogs & Forums.
Search for the popular Blogs & Forums and find the topics themed to your site. Try to comment or reply on the topic with a link to your website. Search engines bots will follow your site when it visits those pages of Blogs & Forums
  4. Create, Submit, and Ping your XML Sitemap
You can create a free XML sitemap here then upload the file to your site (just save it as sitemap.xml). Then ping Google with your sitemap by typing in the following URL in your browser, replacing the domain name with your own:
    http://google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=http://www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml
Next, create an account with Google Webmaster Central, add your site, and submit your XML sitemap.
  5. Run ads for your site in Google adwords.
If you are giving much importance to get indexed in Google, you should create an Adword account and run ads for your site. Its not matter, how small you site is, and the purpose of the site. The thing is just you need to spend some bucks for running your ads in google network, When your account is active, Google definitely has to go to your site because of their quality score, which includes “your landing page quality”.

By following all the steps, your site will be indexed quickly, even with in 24 hours. How ever the time is not guaranteed, but the thing is your site will get indexed quickly than the normal time it has to. You can check your server logs and analytics daily to check the visits of the bots. When you see the visit, you can go to the particular search engine and search for you indexed pages by using site operator site:www.mobilestuffs.in All the best!… :)
